ARC-MAN® test - Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV)

The DuPont™ ARC-MAN® test evaluates the performance of workwear fabrics when exposed to electric arcs, which can generate heat of 6,000 to 30,000° C. It measures the ability of a fabric to provide a thermal barrier between the arc blast and the skin, and resist ignition and break-open. This test quantifies the thermal protection factor of the fabric in terms of its Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV), measured in cal/cm2. The larger this number, the higher the protection level. Measuring the ATPV of NOMEX® fabric systems also demonstrates that double layers of lightweight NOMEX® fabric provides more than twice the protection of a single layer of equivalent weight.

In the NOMEX® Quality Programme, an ATPV has been determined for some protective garments for industrial application.
