THERMO-MAN® test
DuPont™ THERMO-MAN® a life-size mannequin equipped with 122 heat sensors, is dressed in test garments and exposed to a flash fire with temperatures rising to 1000° C. The sensors record the temperature rise on the surface of the mannequin while a computer calculates the predicted percentage of second and third-degree burns a person might suffer under similar conditions. Tests show that a worker dressed in 100-percent cotton or polyester/cotton could suffer serious burns over close to 100 percent of his body, while a worker protected by NOMEX® is likely to sustain burns over approximately 40 per cent of his body, substantially increasing his chances of survival and reducing recovery time.
This test developed by DuPont is also used extensively in the development and testing of protective garments submitted for approval under the NOMEX® Quality Programme
