| Term | Explanation |
| Halogens | Halogens is the name of a chemical family which includes fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine. |
| Hazard | Situation which can cause harm or damage to the health of the human body. |
| Hazard Assessment | A method to analyse the risks to the human body in the working environment. |
| Hazardous Chemical | A chemical which can cause chronic or acute harm upon exposure. |
| Hazardous Chemical Emergency | Any emergency that involves a hazardous chemical. |
| Hazardous Material | A substance (solid, liquid or gas) capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, environment or property. |
| Hazardous Material Emergency | An uncontrolled or unexpected release of a hazardous material. |

| Heat Stress | The strain placed on the body as it attempts to cope with excess internal heat. |
| Heat Transfer Index | Index used in EN standards to measure the transfer of radiant (EN 366)) heat through a given material. See also TPP. |
| Heavy Metals | High-density metallic elements that may demonstrate health hazards as a result of exposure and may contribute to contamination of the environment, including chromium (Cr) ; beryllium (Be) ; lead (Pb) ; mercury (Hg) ; zinc (Zn) ; copper (Cu) ; cadmium (Cd) ; and others. |
| Homogeneous material | Material where the electrical properties of the components (threads, layers) do no differ substantially from each other, or a material which contains an intimate blend of conductive fibres. |
| Hot Zone | An area immediately surrounding a hazardous materials incident that extends far enough to prevent adverse effects from the release of hazardous materials to personnel outside the zone. This area is also referred to as the "exclusion zone," the "red zone" and the "restricted zone" in other documents. |
| Household Hazardous Waste | Hazardous materials, such as paints, pesticides, motor oil and batteries, that require careful storage and proper disposal. |
| Hydrostatic head | This test measures the fabric’s resistance to liquid pressure. Unit : cm/H2O. |
